Who we are

Welcome to the website of the European Brominated Flame Retardant Industry Panel (EBFRIP).

EBFRIP is a European trade association, representing the common interests of the major manufacturers of brominated flame retardants, and is a sector group of Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, based in Brussels. Cefic also houses EFRA, the European Flame Retardants Association, representing all flame retardant producers.

EBFRIP was formed in the mid-1980s. The panel is made up of three Member Companies “ Albemarle, Chemtura and ICL-IP “ who are joined by a number of major polymer producers and downstream users as Associate Members.

Today EBFRIP acts as the main European spokesperson for the bromine flame retardants industry on a number of key issues, including fire safety, as well as representing the industry position on environmental, health, and legislative issues.  We work closely with regulators to promote rigorous and balanced assessment of risk in the use of brominated flame retardants, in all relevant legislations, including of course REACH.  We also administer a voluntary industry programme (VECAP) aimed at promoting responsible use and control of emissions during materials handling and processing, both in manufacturers and in downstream users.

In basing its position on science, EBFRIP follows closely and encourages developments in the scientific understanding of brominated flame retardants as related to health and the environment.  In this respect, EBFRIP is supported by the industry's global organisation, BSEF.  EBFRIP is committed to working proactively with its stakeholders “ customers, regulators and policy makers, consumers and fire prevention groups “ to minimise environmental impacts and to maximise the consumer safety benefits.
